Author: Ward Cheney ISBN: 525 Genre: Computers File Size: 69.72 MB Format: PDF, Docs Download: 412 Read: 513 Ward Cheney and David Kincaid have developed Linear Algebra: Theory and Applications, Second Edition, a multi-faceted introductory textbook, which was motivated by their desire for a single text that meets the various requirements for differing courses within linear algebra. For theoretically-oriented students, the text guides them as they devise proofs and deal with abstractions by focusing on a comprehensive blend between theory and applications. For application-oriented science and engineering students, it contains numerous exercises that help them focus on understanding and learning not only vector spaces, matrices, and linear transformations, but uses of software tools available for use in applied linear algebra.
Using a flexible design, it is an ideal textbook for instructors who wish to make their own choice regarding what material to emphasis, and to accentuate those choices with homework assignments from a large variety of exercises, both in the text and online. Author: Alain M Robert ISBN: 968 Genre: Mathematics File Size: 61.6 MB Format: PDF, ePub, Docs Download: 740 Read: 335 This short but rigorous book approaches the main ideas of linear algebra through carefully selected examples and relevant applications. It is intended for students with various interests in mathematics, as well as established scientists seeking to refresh their basic mathematical culture. The book is also a good introduction to functional analysis and quantum theory since it discusses the general principles of linear algebra without finiteness assumptions. Category: Mathematics. Author: Kenneth Kuttler ISBN: Genre: Mathematics File Size: 58.23 MB Format: PDF Download: 934 Read: 710 This is an introduction to linear algebra.
The main part of the book features row operations and everything is done in terms of the row reduced echelon form and specific algorithms. At the end, the more abstract notions of vector spaces and linear transformations on vector spaces are presented.
However, this is intended to be a first course in linear algebra for students who are sophomores or juniors who have had a course in one variable calculus and a reasonable background in college algebra. I have given complete proofs of all the fundamental ideas, but some topics such as Markov matrices are not complete in this book but receive a plausible introduction. The book contains a complete treatment of determinants and a simple proof of the Cayley Hamilton theorem although these are optional topics. The Jordan form is presented as an appendix. I see this theorem as the beginning of more advanced topics in linear algebra and not really part of a beginning linear algebra course. There are extensions of many of the topics of this book in my on line book.

I have also not emphasized that linear algebra can be carried out with any field although there is an optional section on this topic, most of the book being devoted to either the real numbers or the complex numbers. It seems to me this is a reasonable specialization for a first course in linear algebra. Category: Mathematics.
These examples cover the kinds of problems you're likely to see in an intro-level course pretty thoroughly. I've been really surprised by how helpful this book actually is; I assumed that either the textbook would be enough or I could just look more stuff up online as needed. Technically I could I guess but this is a big time-saver in that when I'm working on stuff I'm often looking for a good example of a specific kind of problem and it's not always easy to dig through a million web sites to find it. In general, this is well-organized with a good table of contents so it's easy to find problems that relate to your particular issue. In general, the examples are appropriately chosen so that they are representative of the kinds of exercises you'd run into in an ordinary textbook.
